![]() ![]() I'm aware that Blizzard's "Hell" does not particularly resemble that of the Christian mythology, but that's beside the point.īy the time I had my fill of Diablo, I felt like I had faced Hell. These were all questions I faced subconsciously. Why would a place like this exist? What is evil's motivation? What is God's motivation for sending me here? Where does Hell fit into the universe? Here was a vision of Hell as a place of pure unadulterated evil. The game actually forced me to contextualize Hell. I was in territory I shouldn't be in, and I liked it. In fact it made the game all the more fascinating to me. Not only was the atmosphere oppressively evil, but while playing I had a pervasive feeling of sacrilege and overstepping my boundaries as a believer in God.īut this didn't stop me from playing. ![]() To me at that time, God might as well have been real, and Hell might as well have existed.Īs a result, playing Diablo was terrifying. My brother and I were left to explore the game ourselves. He described it as "going into a room, clicking on monsters, then going into another room and clicking on more monsters." I assume my dad actually got it for himself, but he couldn't see the appeal of the game. I was a 10 year old casual Christian (in a casually Christian family) when my dad brought home the original Diablo for my brother and I. I'm not here to start any sort of religious debate, but I'm curious about people who played the Diablo games as Christians (or other similar faiths).
